Macushield+ Omega LMZ3 is suitable for vegetarians.

What is Omega 3?

Omega 3 is a family of nutrients, also known as fatty acids, found in lots of foods. There are three main types: alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). Getting 250mg of DHA into your diet a day is proven to help you maintain normal vision.

How does DHA support normal vision?

DHA is found in high concentrations in the retina. For good reason too, as it helps the cells in the retina function optimally.

The retina is a specialised part of the inner eye. It’s important because the retina’s light-sensitive cells, called photoreceptors, convert light into electric signals, which are sent via the optic nerve to the brain and become the images that we see. These cells have a high concentration of DHA.

The retina needs a constant supply of DHA to function normally. Because the body can only make small amounts of DHA, diets rich in Omega 3 can help to maintain normal vision.

What is MacuShield Original+ Omega3?

Look out for what you love with MacuShield Original+ Omega 3. A food supplement for eye health* which combines all three macular carotenoids – lutein, meso-zeaxanthin and zeaxanthin, with Omega 3 and vitamin B2.

Our formulation contains DHA, the type of Omega 3 fatty acid which is scientifically proven to help maintain normal vision*. Including 250mg of DHA in your daily diet is enough to gain the benefit for your eye health – and is found in just one of our softgel capsules.

Perfect for vegetarians, our Omega 3 comes from algal oil, a sustainable plant-based alternative to fish oil. No fishy aftertaste or marine impact, just a simple choice for you.

Useful Definitions
Carotenoids – Carotenoids are naturally occurring plant pigments found in nature. Over 700 carotenoids have been identified to date, which include the carotenoids lutein, zeaxanthin and meso-zeaxanthin.

Lutein – A natural carotenoid entirely of dietary origin, which accumulates at the macula at the back of the eye. Lutein is most commonly found in dark green, leafy vegetables such as spinach, kale or peas.

Macula – It is the central and most sensitive part of the retina. The carotenoids luten, zeaxanthin and meso-zeaxanthin can be found at the macula.

Macular Pigment – The dietary carotenoids lutein, zeaxanthin and meso-zeaxanthin accumulate at the macula where they are collectively known as macular pigment.

Meso-zeaxanthin – Meso-zeaxanthin is the most central carotenoid found at the epicentre of the macula. Meso-zeaxanthin is naturally occurring in the human food chain, found in several species of fish to date.

Oxidative Stress – Oxidative stress refers to damage by reactive, unstable molecules. These molecules, which include free radicals, are produced naturally in the body through oxygen metabolism.

Retina – The retina is the light-sensitive layer of tissue at the back of the inner eye. It acts like the film in a camera; images come through the eyes’ lens and are focused on the retina. The retina then converts these images to electric signals and sends them via the optic nerve to the brain.

Zeaxanthin – A natural carotenoid entirely of dietary origin, which accumulates at the macula at the back of the eye. Zeaxanthin is commonly found in brightly coloured fruit and vegetables such as peppers and sweetcorn.
